• Check for injuries.
  • Call the police (911), tell them where you are, what happened and if there are injuries.
  • As difficult as it may be, remain calm (get the facts straight), in your head review the sequence of events leading up to the accident so when the police arrive, you can calmly and accurately explain to them how the accident occurred.
  • If at all possible, do not move the vehicles (PROTECT THE ACCIDENT SCENE).
  • Take photos/video of the scene including damage and position of all vehicles from several different angles. Cell phone photos will work for documentation purposes.
  • Get names and phone numbers of witnesses and take a picture of their license plate number.
  • Exchange information with the other drivers. Get: NAME, ADDRESS, PHONE, INSURER’S NAME, INSURER’S PHONE and POLICY NUMBER for all of the drivers involved.
  • When the police arrive calmly and accurately explain to them how the accident occurred and be specific. For example, I saw the other driver talking on his cell phone as he went through the stop sign. Don’t make the mistake in thinking that the officer will figure it out, if the other driver is calm and lies, and you’re upset and fail to calmly explain what actually occurred, the police report may not the accurate.
